The Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 1994 really showed the best of what this region has to offer. The alpine facilities of Hafjell and Kvitfjell was built to host the alpine skiing games, and has since developed into being among the largest winter destinations of Norway. Trysil is ruling on the top though, as the largest destination for winter activities in Norway, and is found in the eastern part of the region.
Two of the destinations in Oppland and Hedmark are especially suited for cross-country skiers with high requirements: Sjusjøen situated 20 km from Lillehammer, where tourists have enjoyed the varied ski terrain since late 19th century and Beitostølen in Valdres, the family-friendly mountain village where the Norwegian top cross-country racers often prefer to start off their season.
Valdres also consists of exciting smaller destinations like Vaset and Aurdal, just as you find in the valley Gudbrandsdalen too. Besides the large destinations already mentioned in Gudbrandsdalen (Lillehammer etc.), we also reccommend Gålå, Skeikampen and Fefor.
To top it off, in the mountain areas of Jotunheimen and Rondane you really get the full package of Norways fresh air, highest mountains and scenic surroundings!
